Ona Narbutienė

Ona Narbutienė (born October 26, 1930 in Kaunas , † July 10, 2007 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian musicologist and professor at the Music and Theater Academy of Lithuania . In 1999 she received the Lithuanian National Prize for Art and Culture for her services .

Life

Narbutienė was born into the family of a Lithuanian officer and grew up in the Čiūteliai manor near Šilutė . The family was torn apart while fleeing from the Red Army , and Narbutienė reached Vilnius via Kaunas. There she fell victim to the deportations to Siberia in 1949 . She was deported to Irkutsk Oblast , where she had to work in a Buryat kolkhoz and a brick factory before continuing her education at the Irkutsk Music School and then working as a music teacher. After Stalin's death , Narbutienė married and was able to return to Lithuania. From 1955 to 1960 she studied at the Music Academy in Vilnius, then she specialized in music history .

Narbutienė was the author and editor of several works on Lithuanian composers and musical figures, and the author of numerous articles on Lithuanian musical history.

Narbutienė organized the music program of the Thomas Mann Festival in Nida from its beginnings in 1995 to 2007. She was involved in the 2003 successful efforts to put the dance and song festivals of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on the UNESCO list of masterpieces of oral and intangible heritage of humanity .
