The Mussenden Temple

The Mussenden Temple is a small circular building on top of the cliff coast high above the Atlantic Ocean near Castlerock in County Londonderry ( Northern Ireland ).

It was built in 1785 on the model of the Temple of Vesta and belonged to Frederick Augustus Hervey , 4th Earl of Bristol and Anglican Bishop of Derry. The building served as a library and is dedicated to the memory of Hervey's cousin Frideswide Mussenden .

Over the years, the erosion of the cliffs has resulted in the Mussenden Temple standing right on the edge of the demolition. Therefore, in 1997 , the National Trust commissioned work to stabilize the cliff to prevent the building from being lost.

The inscription on the building reads: “ Suave mari magno turbantibus aequora ventis / e terra alterius magnum spectare laborem. ”( Lucretius , German:“ It is pleasant to see the great effort of someone else from the high seas and the sea churning winds / from the land. ”)

Today the Mussenden Temple, together with Downhill House and the surrounding area, is owned by the National Trust as Downhill Estate & Mussenden Temple . The building has been rented for weddings since 2007.
