Mussorgsky ( Russian Мусоргский ) is the name of an old Russian noble family . The family is a branch of the Monastirev family of boyars , descendants of Rurik from the line of the Princes of Smolensk .

The progenitor of the Mussorgsky family is Roman Wassiljewitsch Monastirjew-Mussorga (a descendant of Rurik in the 18th generation).
