from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mustafa Sabbagh ( Arabic مصطفى صباغ, DMG Muṣṭafā Ṣabbāġ ; born around 1965) is a contemporary Syrian businessman and politician who is considered close to the Muslim Brotherhood . He lived in Saudi Arabia for a long time.

He was General Secretary of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (short: Syrian National Coalition), the umbrella organization of the opponents of the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad . He is president of a forum for Syrian companies (Syrian Business Forum) that supported the Syrian revolution against President Bashar al-Assad with the establishment of a fund of 300 million dollars .

In the election for President of the Syrian National Coalition , he lost as the favorite of Qatar to Ahmed Jarba , the favorite of Saudi Arabia . Al-Jarba received 55 votes and Mustafa Sabbagh 52.

Under the heading “Caught in the Crossfire: Between Qatar and Saudi Arabia”, the regional political situation on the website of the Middle East Institute in Washington, DC was summarized as follows:

"It was not primarily the Syrian Brotherhood but a group of" local "Syrian activists headed by Mustafa Sabbagh that supported Qatari interests and positions within the SNC and its successor, the National Coalition ( NC ). But because the Brotherhood often voted with Sabbagh's group, the Saudis started making the organization's life difficult — within opposition bodies but also at home. "
