The Mustaqillik Maydoni (German: Independence Square ) is a central square in the Uzbek capital Tashkent .

history

The history of the square goes back well into the 19th century. After Tashkent was conquered by the Kokand Khanate at the beginning of the 19th century , there was a palace of the Khan of Khokand in the immediate vicinity of today's square. In 1865 the rule of the Khanate over Tashkent ended when Russian troops conquered the city. They had a residence built for the Governor General of Turkestan on today's Mustaqillik Maydoni . Under Soviet rule, the square was renamed Lenin Square and a statue of Lenin stood on the site of today's independence monument . From 1974 the square was called the avenue of parades because it was regularly used for military parades . Under Soviet direction, the development of the square as the central location of the city was promoted, among other things by creating numerous fountains, which still shape the appearance of the square today. After gaining independence in 1991, the square was officially renamed Mustaqillik Maydoni in 1992. The Lenin statue was replaced by the Independence Monument, which is still influential today.

remodeling

From 2003 to 2006 the square and the adjacent buildings were significantly redesigned to give the place a modern atmosphere. As part of this redesign, the Alisher Navoi Library, which was originally located at Mustaqillik Maydoni, was moved to another location to enable the new Senate to be built on the square.

Today's appearance

At Mustaqillik Maydoni there are mainly government buildings, in addition to the Senate building, there is also a building for the cabinet. The square itself is characterized by fountains and the central independence monument with the Uzbek map on top and the mother with the child on the base. There is also an avenue in memory of those who fell in the country in World War II . There are books there that are filled with the names of all the people who gave their lives for Uzbekistan at that time. At the end of the avenue is the statue of a grieving mother and an eternal flame. There are extensive parks in the direction of the Ankhor River, which flows through Tashkent.
