history

According to some traditions, a medieval church already existed before today's church was built. During the time of the Bulgarian rebirth , in the course of the Bulgarian-Greek church struggle for an independent Bulgarian church within the Greek-influenced ecumenical patriarchate of Constantinople , the Bulgarian community in Skopje (then Üsküb) decided to build an independent church. The project had become possible because the Ottoman building laws that had once restricted the construction and renovation of Christian churches had now been relaxed. Construction work began in 1809 under the direction of the builder and painter ( sographer ) Damjan Jankolow. He died during the construction period and the church was completed by his sons, led by Andreja Damjanow. On May 1, 1835, she was consecrated to the birth of Our Lady .

The church is a three-nave stone basilica with an extension to the west. The iconostasis is decorated with marble and wood carvings. The main donors of the building are Хаджи Трайко Дойчинович, Йован Шишко, Петре Зелениковски, Търпе Патишкалия. A year after the completion of the church, a monastery school , teaching in Bulgarian, was built in its courtyard. Around 1850 the school was converted to the Lancaster system and in 1895 it was converted into the Bulgarian Pedagogical School .

According to the Ferman issued by Sultan Abdülaziz on February 28, 1870 to establish the Bulgarian Exarchate , Dorotej von Skopje, the first Bulgarian bishop of the Eparchy of Skopje, was installed in 1874 after a plebiscite of the Slavic population , who finally submitted to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church . The Church of Our Lady became his seat. After Skopje was incorporated into Yugoslavia in 1912 , the church was subordinated to the Serbian and later to the Macedonian Orthodox Church.

It remained an episcopal church until it was destroyed during the earthquake of 1963. From 2005 to 2008 it was completely reconstructed.
