Making a nut block using two axes

As a mother blocks in the will Bergmann language and in the Ruhr German everyday language , an approximately fußlanger , possible knotless wood section referred to as the kindling is used to light fires. This block was initially wrapped tightly with wire, later with adhesive tape and split with two axes at right angles into individual webs, which could then be easily broken off.

Traditionally, mother blocks were branched off from the pit wood at the workplace and taken home by the miners. They were used by the 'mother' to light the coal stoves and kitchen stoves. In doing so, buddies often sawed up the best wooden stamps, just to get hold of a so-called "splendid block". While this wood theft was forbidden, it was considered common law .

Due to the decline in the coal and steel industry and the fact that for around 30 years now hardly any wood has been used in mining for the construction of tunnels , the term withdrew more and more from the Ruhr German , especially since coal and coke are hardly used for cooking and heating purposes .
