Muwattalli I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muwattalli I († around 1420 BC) was a great Hittite king.

Muwattalli was probably GAL MEŠEDI, an office which was often held by the future heir to the throne and which was associated with military functions. He was a close confidante of the great king Ḫuzziya II , murdered him and became king himself. It is not known whether he was a member of the ruling family.

Muwattalli appointed Kantuzzili and Ḫimuili, possibly sons of Ḫuzziyas, to high officials. He made some land donation deeds and saw his country go to war with the Kaškaers . Encouraged by Ḫuzziya's widow, Kantuzzili and Ḫimuili killed the great king and put their brother Tudḫaliya on the throne, who was possibly also a grandson or son-in-law of Ḫuzziya. Its existence is also attested by the discovery of its seal in Ḫattuša .
