The Myōtsū-ji ( Japanese 明 通 寺 ) is a temple of the Omuro branch ( 御 室 派 ) of the Shingon direction of Buddhism in the mountains on the outskirts of the city of Obama in Fukui Prefecture .

history

It is said that the temple was built in 802 by the military commissioner at court, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro ( 坂 上 田村 麻 呂 ; 758–811).

The attachment

The main hall ( Hondō ), also called Yakushi-dō ( 薬 師 堂 ), has a floor plan of 14.09 m × 14.82 m (width × depth) and is a national treasure . It dates back to 1258, according to a report from 1265. The main hall has a hipped roof with a pronounced roof beam and is covered with cypress bark shingles ( 檜 皮 葺 , Hiwada-buki ). It is executed in the pure "Japanese style" .

In the background there is a three-story pagoda ( 三重 塔 , Sanjū-no-tō ) on a hill . It is also registered as a national treasure. It was built in 1270 with a total height of 22.13 m and is also covered with cypress bark shingles.

The main hall was dismantled in 1923 and the pagoda in 1958 and repaired where necessary.

The temple is said to have been surrounded by 25 Klausen in the old second.

Treasures of the temple

In the temple, Yakushi-nyorai , the holy Kōzanze-myōō ( 降 三世 明王 ), the heavenly general Jinja ( 深 沙 大将 ) and the holy Fudō-myōō are venerated . They come from the early Heian period and are all registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan . The first three figures are made from one piece of oak. - The temple also has a collection of 170 medieval books, including the Nyohō kyō ryōsoku kishin fuda ( 如 法 経 料 足 寄 進 札 ) from 1309.

If you walk along the path in the temple, you will pass the memorial stone for Mizuhara Shūōshi and the poet Yamamoto Kazuo ( 山 本 和 夫 ; 1907-1996), who was born in the temple suburbs .
