Mykolas Firkovičius

Mykolas Firkovičius ( Polish Michał Firkowicz , Russian Михаил Иосифович Фиркович , Michail Jossifowitsch Firkowitsch ; born November 17, 1924 in Trakai ; died October 12, 2000 in Vilnius , Lithuania ) was a Lithuanian and spiritual karaim researcher of the Judeo-Karaean minority in Lithuania.

Life

Firkovičius dealt intensively with Karaim, a western Turkish language of the Jewish religious community of the Karaites. He is the author of several publications in this regard, including textbooks. During the Soviet era , the Lithuanian Karean Cultural Society was established in May 1988 in his native Trakai . And after the fall of the communist regime, the parishioners founded the United Community of Lithuanian Karaites in 1992, based in Vilnius. Mykolas Firkovičius became president of this umbrella organization and remained the only Karaean Chassan in Lithuania until his death . In this job he often commuted between Vilnius, Trakai and Panevezys . In addition to the church services, his tasks also included teaching children about religion, including introducing the Karaim language and studying religious guidelines in detail. Mykolas Firkovičius also worked as a civil and industrial engineer .

In 1997 he was awarded the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas (3rd class medal).
