Náttfari

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Náttfari (English: sleepwalker ) was a slave who ran away from his master Garðar Svavarsson when he was the first person to explore Iceland in detail in the 9th century . The place where Náttfari settled is now called Náttfaravík and is located in Skjálfandi Bay . With Náttfari, another slave and a woman fled. Náttfari could thus be described as the first permanent settler in Iceland. However, the Landnámabók did not recognize him as such .
