Wittenberg was a representative of denominational Lutheranism all his life and rejected the Leuenberg Agreement (1973) - in contrast to the teaching staff of the Augustana University . He was just as critical of the ordination of women . He was committed to the legacy of Werner Elert , Hermann Sasse and Paul Althaus .
