The N3 Engine Overhaul Services GmbH & Co. KG (N3) is a company for maintenance and repair of aircraft jet engines, based in Arnstadt (Thuringia). Routine operations began in April 2007 in the newly built plant in the “ Erfurter Kreuz ” industrial park . As a joint venture between Rolls-Royce plc. and Lufthansa Technik AG, N3 has developed into one of the world's most modern maintenance centers for large civil engines in a very short time. The name "N3" refers to the typical Rolls-Royce engine design with three shafts that rotate at different speeds.

The number of employees is currently 780, including 47 trainees who are being trained as aircraft mechanics in the field of engine technology and as specialists in warehouse logistics.

Orientation / specialization

N3 is the only company in Europe that overhauls and repairs the Rolls-Royce engine types Trent 500, Trent 700, Trent 900 and Trent XWB.

The engines are used in the Airbus models A340 (Trent 500), A330 (Trent 700), A380 (Trent 900) and A350 (Trent XWB).

Maintenance and repair of engines

N3 is the only maintenance company in the world that uses the highly efficient “Vertical Strip” method for the Trent engines mentioned. In this process, the engine is broken down vertically into its sub-assemblies, which enables the individual engine modules to be dismantled in a manner that is gentle on the material. With the help of special electronically-mechanically operated lifting platforms, the mechanics work on all four engine types particularly efficiently and ergonomically. The modules are then dismantled into their individual parts or sub-assemblies in the module dismantling areas, cleaned and assessed. The final assembly of the engine also takes place in a vertical suspension. The workshop in which the engines are overhauled has an area of 25,000 m² (2.5 ha).

In addition to the maintenance of all engine parts, N3 also takes care of their restoration up to the quality of new parts. Individual repairs for international customers are also part of the company's portfolio. Whether the part needs to be replaced, repaired or overhauled is decided after the diagnosis. The repair planners then convert each order into detailed work plans, taking into account the legal requirements and the manufacturer's specifications. Complex overhauls, repairs and modifications can be carried out completely in the ultra-modern machine park.

If the engine has been overhauled or repaired, it must then be tested for proper functionality. The performance of each engine is checked in a test cell with a cross-section of 14 × 14 meters, regardless of the depth of intervention at N3. The N3 test stand has a total length of 110 meters and is one of the world's largest and most modern in an overhaul center. The maximum air throughput in the cell is 3,600 kg / s, which corresponds to the volume of five single-family houses. The test run is carried out under the strictest safety regulations in various stages prescribed by the manufacturer Rolls-Royce: It must be precisely proven that the engine has the necessary mechanical functionality and the specified performance. If the engine has passed the test run, the final comparison of the engine with the specifications defined by Rolls-Royce follows and it is sent back to the customer.

history

The N3 Engine Overhaul Services GmbH & Co. KG was founded as a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG and Rolls-Royce plc in of 2003. After the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (Federal Aviation Office) granted approval as a maintenance organization for Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines in April 2007 , the plant went into operation in the same month. In June 2007, the engine test stand was approved, in which the engines are tested under real flight conditions after the overhaul or repair before they can be properly delivered to the customer.

The official opening took place on September 14, 2007 in the presence of the Thuringian Minister-President Dieter Althaus , the Federal Minister of Transport Wolfgang Tiefensee and the Chairman of the Board of Rolls-Royce plc, Sir John Rose . Since then, the company has developed rapidly.

environmental Protection

One of the main tenets of N3 Engine Overhaul Services (N3) is protecting the environment and the resulting obligation to promote the well-being of employees and the community. Environmental protection was already taken into account when planning the company and certification according to DIN EN ISO 14001 - environmental management was established. All processes running in the plant are environmentally friendly, including the final function test of the engines. The exhaust air that is generated when the engine is tested is thoroughly cleaned of pollutants before it is subsequently released into the environment. The test stand is still designed for very low noise emissions .

With the use of modern repair processes for engine components, N3 also makes a contribution to resource-saving management.
