The vehicles of the type Hendrie A of the Natal Government Railways (NGR) were a Tender steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 2'C1 '( Pacific ). The locomotives were named after their designer, DA Hendrie, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the NGR.
The North British Locomotive Company delivered two locomotives in 1905; they were given the track numbers 325 and 326. They were intended for use on the Natal Main Line , on the flatter sections between Ladysmith and Charlestown .
The design and external appearance of the locomotives corresponded to the British design preferred by Hendrie with sheet metal frames, internal Allan controls and low-lying circumference with wheel protection boxes. The frame was cranked around the standing boiler and the towing axle was mounted on the outside. The driving wheel diameter of 51 inches (1,295 mm) was the smallest of all South African Cape Track Pacifics.
When the NGR was incorporated into the South AfricanRailways (SAR) in 1910, the machines with the number 762 and 763 were taken over as class 2 . They were in use until the 1930s, most recently in the Eastern Transvaal . No copy has survived.
