Night porter

The night porter is an employee in a hotel or restaurant who takes care of the reception tasks that arise during the night and looks after arriving guests. This occupational field is usually found in hotels with four stars and upwards. The tasks to be performed during the night between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. include:

  • Receipt and control of waiter bills
  • Contact person and manager for employees (thus shift management)
  • Contact person for guests and representation of the management during the night
  • Staffing of the reception (check-in / check-out)
  • Acceptance of all phone calls (for activities outdoors by forwarding to a mobile phone)
  • Enter the addresses and information of guests (according to the Registration Act) into the system
  • Monitoring of all security-relevant areas and facilities
  • Implementation of regular patrols throughout the hotel area
  • Transmission of all important information from the previous day to the early shift
  • Preparation of the daily closing (collection of all accounting data for a day)
  • in some hotels also the preparation of breakfast and household chores

The night porter has to flexibly divide his various tasks and assess them according to daily changing priorities .

Vocational training in the hotel industry is not a mandatory requirement for working as a night porter, but is welcome. Applicants with specialist training in one of the possible areas of the hotel industry are therefore given preferential treatment. Bookkeeping skills and prior knowledge are an asset.

  • Foreign language skills (at least English)
  • Reliability and loyalty
