The Nāgarī script is the predecessor of the Devanagari and other scriptures and was initially only used for writing Sanskrit.

The Nāgarī script appeared around the 8th century AD in ancient India as an eastern variant of the Gupta script (the western variant of which is the Śāradā ). Various scripts later developed from it, e.g. B. the Devanagari , the Eastern Nagari script and the Nandinagari . In addition, the Nāgarī script also influenced the development of the Śāradā-derived Gurmukhī script .
