The Museum of History and Culture Nagasaki ( Jap. 長崎歴史文化博物館 , Nagasaki Rekishi Bunka Hakubutsukan , Eng. Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture ) is a 2005 opened museum in Nagasaki . The city museum provides information about the history and culture of Nagasaki, especially about the historical contacts and trade relations with Europe, China and Korea in the period between 1641 and 1854.

History and description

The museum was jointly built by Nagasaki Prefecture and Nagasaki City and opened in 2005. The company Nomura Kōgeisha (English Nomura Co. ) took over the operation and maintenance on behalf of the city and prefecture .

The museum's holdings include around 48,000 objects, including numerous manuscripts, books, maps, paintings and decorative arts products. The vast majority comes from the time between 、 when Japan maintained trade contacts with Asia and Europe via the Dutch trading post Dejima located here and a trading post for Chinese merchants ( Tōjin yashiki ) established in 1688 . The city of Nagasaki was directly subordinate to the central government ( Tokugawa Shogunate ) in Edo and was administered by magistrates ( Nagasaki bugyō ). The museum includes reconstructed buildings of the magistrature ( bugyōsho ) that was once located at this point .

The permanent exhibition presents the city's relations with Portugal and Spain during the so-called Christian Century (1549–1650), as well as the subsequent exchange with China, Korea and the Netherlands.

Several special exhibitions each year deal with selected topics in this context. There are also courses, lectures, symposia and special programs for schools. The museum also publishes research reports ( Kenkyū Kiyō - Research Studies ), annual accounts ( Nenpō ) and exhibition catalogs .

The holdings of the former department of regional history (approx. 20,000 manuscripts and 40,000 printed works) taken over from the prefectural library can be examined for research purposes in a special reading room ( reference room ). A counseling service is available for questions about Nagasaki's history.
