Nahbollenbach Army Depot
The Storage Depot in Nahbollenbach was once the US Army's largest warehouse and distribution center outside of the United States.
location
The depot was located in the eastern part of the city of Idar-Oberstein, bordering on what is now the Nahbollenbach district , directly on federal highway 41 . The main road, a railway connection and a helicopter landing pad north of the B 41 ensured good traffic development. The depot was enclosed by a fence. It comprised around 100,000 square meters of open space and four large warehouses, as well as an administration building.
history
Until the end of the Second World War, there was a Wehrmacht depot on the site. After the war ended, the French armed forces continued to operate the depot, which handed it over to the US Army in 1950. As early as 1951, this began with an expansion and the construction of large warehouses, which was completed in 1952. The Winterhauch Storage Site was in the immediate vicinity. Extensive war material was stored in both depots, which should primarily be used in connection with REFORGER .
During the heyday of the US Depot, up to 1,000 civilian workers worked at the facility and it was the largest U.S. Forces supply depot outside the United States.
After the closure of the depot and the return of the site to the Federal Republic of Germany, the city of Idar-Oberstein has installed the Nahetal business park there since the 1990s. All the facilities in the depot were dismantled by 2001. All that remains is the administration building, which is now used as an office building for a commercial company and bears the name "Kennedy Center".
Today's business park
In the course of the conversion of military areas in Rhineland-Palatinate, the site was converted into an industrial park with a usable area of approx. Over the years a hardware store, an electronics store, a flower wholesaler, a clothing store and a shoe store have sprung up here. Furthermore, a gas station, a fast food restaurant, a car dealership and a car rental company as well as two auto parts suppliers, the fire station 3 and the exhibition hall of the city of Idar-Oberstein were built.
