Fujiwara no Kamatari

Fujiwara no Kamatari ( Japanese 藤原 鎌 足 ; * 614 ; † 669 ) was the founder of the influential family clan of the Fujiwara in Japan . He came from the Nakatomi family and was the son of Nakatomi no Mikeko , his maiden name was therefore Nakatomi no Kamatari ( 中 臣 鎌 足 ). He was given the name Fujiwara shortly before the death of Emperor Tenji.

He was a friend and supporter of Prince Naka no Ōe, who later became Emperor Tenji . In 645, the prince and Kamatari organized a coup d'état ( Isshi incident ), in the course of which they killed Soga no Iruka , who had gained great influence on Empress Kōgyoku .

Kamatari supported the emperor throughout his life, the emperor gave him the highest rank Taishokukan and a new clan name, Fujiwara , as an honor.

His son was Fujiwara no Fuhito (or Fubito).
