Namphanion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Namphanion (also: Namphamum ; † allegedly 180 in Madauros ) was a legendary Christian martyr and saint , whose historical existence is doubtful.

According to legend, Namphanion came from Carthage and was executed in Madauros in Numidia together with 27 co-religionists, all of whom had Punic names . However, St. Augustine of Hippo already doubts that such a martyrdom actually took place, since the alleged martyrs were completely unknown to him, and the Bollandists also assumed that Namphanion's martyrdom was not authentic. Nevertheless, the Namphanion was given the title of arch martyr and there is also a cult of saints around him with a memorial day on July 4th.
