Natalia Luis-Bassa (born July 13, 1966 , Caracas , Venezuela ) is the musical director of the Haffner Orchestra in Lancaster and the Hallam Sinfonia in Sheffield.

Life

Luis-Bassa began her musical education at the age of 15 when she studied oboe at the Orquesta Juvenil de Venezuela. She also studied music at the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales, where she was the appointed music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Falcón. She graduated from the Royal Music School in London. Then she was there for two years as a “Junior Fellow” as an opera conductor.

In 2002 she took part in the 1st Maazel-Vilar Conducting Competition in New York and won second prize. She then gained experience with a variety of orchestras, both in the UK and abroad, including the Orquesta Sinfónica Venezuela, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Paragon Ensemble, the Bombay Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Oman.

Natalia holds a Masters Degree from the University of Huddersfield , where she also teaches conducting.
