The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is the umbrella organization for three ongoing U.S. science academies.

The oldest member is the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) founded in 1863 . In 1916, under the influence of the First World War and following a request from President Woodrow Wilson, the National Research Council (NRC) was founded by the National Academy of Sciences . After the end of the war, President Wilson issued an executive order that ensured the continued existence of the council. This order was confirmed by corresponding decrees by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 and George HW Bush in 1993. In 1964, the National Academy of Sciences also founded the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and in 1970 the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which has been the third academy of the National Academies of Sciences since 2015 under the name National Academy of Medicine (NAM) . The National Academy of Sciences has around 2,100 members, the National Academy of Engineering around 2,000, and the National Academy of Medicine around 1,600. The National Research Council is composed of members of these three academies.
