National Association of Colored Women's Clubs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Association for Colored Women's Clubs ( NACWC ) is an American organization founded in July 1896 during the first annual meeting of the National Federation of Afro-American Women in Washington, DC . It was created through a merger of the National Federation of African-American Women , the Woman's Era Club of Boston and the National League of Colored Women of Washington after a call by Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin . Between 1896 and 1904, the NACWC was known as the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) . She adopted the motto “Lifting as we climb” in order to “show an ignorant and suspicious world that our goals and interests are identical to those of all good aspiring women”. The motto should reflect the goal of the association: Raising the reputation of the black population when black women take on leadership roles and initiate changes in the community.
