National Association of Social Workers

National Association of Social Workers ( NASW ) is the world's largest membership organization for professional social workers with more than 150,000 members. NASW was founded in 1955. The organization is based in Washington . NASW was created in 1955 through the merger of seven organizations:

  • American Association of Social Workers
  • American Association of Medical Social Workers
  • American Association of Psychiatric Social Workers
  • National Association of School Social Workers
  • American Association of Group Workers
  • Association for the Study of Community Organization
  • Social Work Research Group

NASW members are employed in schools, hospitals, retirement homes, universities, clinics, youth welfare offices and other social institutions and organizations.

NASW has affiliations in all 50 US states and in Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. There is also an international branch association.

The National Association of Social Workers Foundation (NASWF) is a charity that was founded by NASW in 2001.
