The National SIGINT Operations Center (NSOC) circa 1985

1969 was EC-121 patrol aircraft of the US Navy over the Sea of Japan shot down. In the hours that followed, NSA officials were overwhelmed by the information they needed to put together a coordinated response for the agency and national leadership. As a result, the National SIGINT Watch Center (NSWC) was established in 1968 and renamed the National SIGINT Operations Center (NSOC) in 1973. In 1996 it got its current name. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the NSOC's mission was expanded as a result of the US policy objective of global surveillance .
