National Water Supply and Sanitation Council

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council ( NWASCO ; German roughly: "National Council for Water Supply and Sanitation ") is the national control and advisory body for water policy in Zambia . It advises the government on all public issues relating to the use of water resources. The seat of the council is in Lusaka . It was created on the basis of the Water Supply and Sanitation Act No. 28 of 1997 created.

The central goal of NWASCO is to regulate the water supply and sanitation in the area of ​​Zambia according to criteria of efficiency and sustainability.

The following core concerns are being pursued for their implementation:

  • Licensing issues,
  • Advising the government on water supply and sanitation issues,
  • Establishing industry standards and guidelines and their enforcement,
  • Advising regional water suppliers on how to deal with consumer complaints and
  • Consumer information on water supply and sanitation issues.

NWASCO has had a resource and competence center since December 2011 in order to be able to provide information with this central information point on all water issues that are important for the country. The equipment includes a specialist library and computer workstations for users. The offers are aimed at individuals, research institutions, municipalities, cooperation partners, multipliers, politicians and students. Knowledge of relevant and current information on water policy is made available to these groups of people so that they can be given greater consideration in decision-making and development processes.

In Zambia, under the Local Government Act , the Water Supply and Sanitation Act No. 28 of 1997 (German: Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal Act) and, on the basis of the National Water Policy, the Ministry of Local Government and Housing and the local authorities are responsible for public water supply and sewage disposal. Their responsibility extends to both urban and rural areas.
