The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST; Greek Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης, ΕΜΣΤ ; scientific transliteration Ethniko Museio Synchronēs Technēs ) is an art museum in Athens . The EMST shows Greek and international art from the late 1970s to the present day.

history

With the National Gallery (Athens) , the Municipal Gallery of Athens and the private Benaki Museum, Athens had three larger art museums, but their focus is on the art of the past. In 1997 the State Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in Thessaloniki ; the establishment of a similar institution in Athens was pending. Around the same time, the subway operator in Athens had acquired the former Fix brewery building in order to build a Park & Ride car park in its place. Architecture enthusiasts kept the building occupied and instead demanded a cultural use. Finally a compromise was reached, half of which was demolished and an underground car park could be built, the other half was left to the state in 2000 on condition that it was used for cultural purposes. From 2003 exhibitions of the new National Museum of Contemporary Art were shown in the ruins, from 2007 to 2013 the building was renovated and expanded into a museum. Until 2014 it was temporarily housed in the Odeon building in Athens .

In 2017, EMST was the main exhibition venue for documenta 14 in Athens.
