The National Museum of the Democratic Republic of the Congo ( French: Musée National de la République Démocratique du Congo (MNRDC) ) is a museum for the cultural history of the numerous ethnicities and historical epochs of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the capital Kinshasa . It was officially handed over to the DR Congo in June 2019 by representatives of the Republic of Korea as a sponsor and thus replaced the previous national museum on Mont Ngaliema in Kinshasa.

The construction costs of US $ 21 million were funded by the Korean Agency for Cooperation (KOICA). The building was built after a construction period of 33 months in cooperation between experts from the DR Congo and the Republic of Korea under modern aspects (customary building materials, natural air circulation with partial abandonment of air conditioning) and represents South Korea's largest cultural and political investment in Central Africa to date the long-cherished plan was realized to build a modern museum appropriate to the cultural history of the Congo.

400 objects are presented in their cultural context on 6,000 m² in three halls, although most of the museum's holdings of around 12,000 objects must be stored in depots. In contrast to the past, when the management and scientific cooperation was determined for decades by Belgian scientists from the Africa Museum near Brussels, Congolese experts were now also trained in South Korea. Thus the Congolese cultural politicians have placed their cooperation on a broader international basis than before.

The museum was opened to the public on November 23, 2019 by the President of the DR Congo, Félix Tshisekedi . With reference to demands for the repatriation of Congolese cultural goods , for example from the Africa Museum in a suburb of Brussels, he thanked the former colonial power Belgium for helping the Congo to preserve its heritage and at the same time spoke in favor of "organized" "Return of the works. " It's one thing to ask about the objects, another to keep them properly. So the idea is there, but it has to be implemented gradually. It's Congolese heritage, so it has to be returned one day, but that has to be organized . "
