The National Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of Guatemala ( Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología , [abbreviation MUNAE]) is located in the Parque Aurora of the capital Guatemala City . It is the central Guatemalan institution for the preservation and exhibition of the archaeological and ethnological heritage of the country and includes a permanent exhibition on various topics of Mayan culture in Guatemala. The museum is also responsible for researching the Mesoamerican cultures in Guatemala; since August 1998 it has officially been part of the country's cultural heritage.

location

The museum is located in the south of the capital on 7th Avenida, corner of 5th street (calle) . A bus stop is right in front of it.

history

After the country's cultural treasures were placed under protection in the 1920s, the National Museum of Archeology and Ethnology was founded in 1931 and housed in the former El Calvario church on 6ª. avenida “A”. It was not until 1946 that it was placed in the current building, which was originally built for the 1939 agricultural exhibition.

The museum building offers around 3000 m² of exhibition space; another 1,500 m² in the basement are available for storage, restoration and research. The museum is part of the museum complex in Guatemala City.

exhibition

The museum houses a collection of around 20,000 archaeological artifacts and 5,000 ethnological pieces. It has a collection of archaeological items, most of which come from excavations in Guatemala. It also has collections of ethnological objects and ceremonial clothing, as well as items for everyday use from colonial times. There are a large number of monumental stone sculptures. These include steles from Tikal , Uaxactún and Piedras Negras from the classical period , the outstanding throne of Piedras Negras, and depictions of animals from the pre-classical Mayan ruins of Kaminaljuyú .

The collections include ceramics, stone, shells, bones and jade, pre-Hispanic fabric, and a collection of pictorial objects and photographs. One of the most impressive exhibits is stele 12 from the year 672. The most important pieces in the museum also include ceramics and sculptures from Kaminaljuyú, a large wooden model by Tikal , and classic steles from Peten in a rotunda .
