The National Museum of Natural History of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: National Museum of Natural History; short form: Nature Museum) has been located in the capital in the south of the Grand Duchy since it was founded in 1854 . To be more precise, the museum is located in the Grund district on the eastern Alzette river near the Neumünster Abbey culture and assembly center .

Museum missions

According to the law of June 25, 2004 on the restructuring of state cultural institutes, the National Museum of Natural History has the following tasks:

  • study and document the natural heritage and contribute to its conservation;
  • Carry out surveys and paleontological, mineralogical and petrological excavations, and supervise such excavations carried out by public or private entities as well as by individuals;
  • to collect, preserve and study scientific collections and natural heritage data, including computerized data, and to make these collections and data available to the public;
  • Public relations in its field, in particular through exhibitions, publications, conferences, seminars and educational activities;
  • Raise public awareness of the knowledge and conservation of the natural heritage of the country and the Greater Region;
  • to contribute to the promotion of scientific culture in general;
  • to manage scientific, museum, educational and technical outbuildings;
  • Collaborate in the creation of regional and local museums and contribute to their management;
  • initiate and help collaborate with public and private organizations as well as with individuals in their own fields, to initiate scientific studies, conferences and educational activities.

In addition to general services (technology, documentation, etc.), the Luxembourg National Museum of Natural History is divided into seven scientific areas:

  • Life Sciences Research Department:
    • Section for the zoology of invertebrates
    • Section for the zoology of the vertebrates
    • Botany Section
    • Ecology Section
  • Research Department for Earth and Universe Sciences:
    • Section for paleontology
    • Geology and Mineralogy Section
    • Section for geophysics and astrophysics
