The National Museum of Mauritania or the National Museum of Nouakchott ( French Musée National de Nouakchott ) in Mauritania has an archaeological and ethnographic collection.

Museum building

Housed in a two-story building constructed in 1972 by a Chinese company, the National Museum also houses the Mauritanian Institute for Scientific Research , the Center for the Preservation of Mauritanian Manuscripts, and the National Library of Mauritania . The museum was opened in 1972 in the presence of the then President Moktar Ould Daddah . It consists of two exhibition rooms and an additional room for temporary exhibitions.

A circle of friends, the Association des Amis de l'Office Nationale des Musées, exists to support these and other institutions .

Collections

  • The archaeological collection (200 square meters) on the ground floor displays objects from the Moustérien , Atérien and Neolithic ages, as well as holdings from excavations carried out in several historic cities in Mauritania, including Koumbi Saleh , Aoudaghost , Tichit , Ouadane and Azougui .
  • The ethnographic collection (400 square meters) on the first floor contains objects from different cultures of Mauritanian society.
  • The art collection shows sculptures by Mauritanian and foreign artists.
  • Photographs and postal history certificates are exhibited in two other areas.
