The Nation Bank was a US bank headquartered in Charlotte . The bank is a direct predecessor of Bank of America and had its origins in the "Commercial National Bank" of 1874 and the "American Trust Company" of 1909. Both predecessors were in turn founded in Charlotte. Through successive takeovers, the company continued to grow over the decades and in 1998 was one of the largest credit institutions in the United States. This year it was decided to merge the institute with the “BankAmerica Corporation”. Although NationsBank was the acquiring party, a slightly adapted variant of the acquired company was chosen as the name of the merged company: "Bank of America".
