Nature museum on Kasernenplatz in Lucerne

The Lucerne Nature Museum is the only full natural history museum in Central Switzerland . Its history begins in the 18th century with a private predecessor museum and led to today's museum building on Kasernenplatz in Lucerne .

museum

The overriding goals of the Natur-Museum Luzern are the popular presentation of scientific information, the preservation and presentation of collections as well as sensitization for nature and the environment.

history

A nature museum has existed in Lucerne since the 18th century. It was called Museum Lucernense Langianum and was founded by Karl Nicolaus Lange . The collection later came to the St. Urban Monastery , but after its dissolution in 1848 it became the property of the Canton of Lucerne. One year later, in 1949, the collection was merged with the holdings of the natural history cabinet of the college in a building on Franziskanerplatz. It was not until 1978 that the various collections distributed throughout the city of Lucerne could finally be shown in the newly reconstructed orphanage on Kasernenplatz in the newly opened Lucerne Nature Museum .

architecture

The building is a replica from 1976. The original building, Jakob Singer's orphanage, was built in 1808/11, stood in the way of the road connection to the N2 and was demolished.
