Natural Selection 2 is a computer game by the American developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment and the paid sequel to Mod Natural Selection . The worldwide release date was October 31, 2012 on the digital distribution distribution Steam . In terms of content, the game is organized in a sci-fiction universe in which the parties marines and aliens fight against each other. It is fought for smaller territories such as space stations and raw materials.

Gameplay

As in the previous one, the two teams marines and aliens (Kharaa) compete against each other. Both teams operate from a base and aim to destroy the opposing base. The players each control one actor from the first person perspective . Both teams proceed differently: While the Marines rely on technology and modern weapons and equipment such as impulse grenades and teleporters, the aliens act within their "natural" conditions. They attack by biting, by spraying poisonous gas or by massive ramming attacks. Furthermore, depending on the species, they can climb or fly on walls. Both classes can buy new weapons or new skills through a credit system. Because of these fundamental differences in the parties, gaming behavior can change significantly, even though both sides are pursuing the same goal.

Another important element of the game, the Commander mode . Here, each assumes a player of a team, the role of a commander (Commander) , who coordinates his teammates tactically. In contrast to the rest of the team, the Commander acts from a bird's eye view. Similar to a strategy game, the commander builds buildings and objects, improved weapons and equipment through research and coordinates the team tactically. Above all by coordinating the whole team, the commander can have a very large and decisive influence on the game. In the Marines, the commander is in the command station (Command Station) , on aliens, it is the nest (hive) . In the game, however, the English terms are used throughout.

Marines

The Marines class is human only and they are also called Frontiersman in the game . Except for the selectable gender and the visual design of the suits, the soldiers do not differ in terms of play. However, in the course of the game, the marines can arm themselves with weapons and equipment individually and adapt them to personal game behavior. These include the most important weapons in addition to the standard equipped machine gun (assault rifle) , a shotgun (shotgun) and the flamethrower (Flamethrower) . The most important equipment includes a rocket backpack (jetpack) and a combat suit (exosuit) . Furthermore, a pistol and a construction tool are equipped as secondary weapons. With the construction tool it is possible for the marines to build and repair objects placed by the commander.

Aliens

The Alien class initially starts in a basic form that can hardly be changed, the Skulk . In the course of the game, however, they can develop individually, both in terms of the development of different skills, but also in terms of visual appearance. For example, it is possible to learn to fly or to acquire the ability to build defensive structures. It is possible for players to play alongside the Skulk , the Gorge , the Lerk , the Fade or the Onos . The gorge provides a class that is mainly responsible for supporting the team and building defensive structures. The Lerk uses his ability to fly to quickly penetrate into enemy-occupied areas of the map and to leave again just as quickly after short attacks. As a fade , the player is offered a very agile and effective way of life. Due to the ability of teleportation over short distances, as well as the free and invisible movement over short distances, the fade is considered a dreaded class among its opponents. The development of the Onos offers a high number of life points and very strong attacks, but he is comparatively sluggish in his movement.

Development history

The official development of Natural Selection 2 began in 2006. At that time, after some financial problems, development began under the name Natural Selection: Source . With the paid Kodiak update published in May 2014, the developer studio implemented content that was created by a player for the first time and at the same time gave him 50% of the sales. As in this update, many minor bug fixes and changes by players are regularly included in updates for Natural Selection 2.

Natural Selection 2: Combat

Based on Natural Selection 2, an offshoot was published in 2014 under the name Natural Selection 2: Combat , which focuses purely on the combat part of the game. Analogous to the Combat mode in the Half-Life Mod Natural Selection , marines and aliens face each other on a smaller map with the aim of destroying the main building of the opposing party. The offshoot was developed by Faultline Games, a small development studio that emerged from the modding scene of the main game and is based in Great Britain. It is distributed by Unknown Worlds itself and is also available via the online distribution platform Steam .
