The museum, founded in 1956 had by 2015 established in the 1923 constructed building of the Shanghai Bumwoolbörse in Shanghai Cotton Exchange Building in Huangpu District in the road Henan Nan Lu.

Collections

Part of the museum's holdings come from the old Shanghai Museum of the Royal Asiatic Society , which ceased its work in Shanghai in 1952 and was based in an Art Deco building built for it in 1932 , which today houses the Rockbund Art Museum . The museum exhibits, among other things, a 140-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton of the Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis Young et Zhao ( 合 川马 门 龙 龙 ) from Hechuan in the Sichuan province .
