history
founding
History of the development of the natural theater: It took a lot of courage to found a natural theater in Hayingen shortly after the war . The Hayinger citizens were there with great enthusiasm. The 700th anniversary of the city charter in 1947 provided the impetus for this. It was initially founded as part of the Swabian Alb Association , which was the first to be approved by the French military authorities. Adult plays have been played there since 1949, penned by Martin Schleker senior until 1968, and since then Martin Schleker junior has written them and staged them himself until a few years ago. Having a “house writer” to write the plays for the theater each year is not common for open-air theaters; this is probably unique for the Hayinger Nature Theater.
Extract from the protocol
Excerpt from the minutes of the municipal council meeting on April 25, 1948:
“Founding a nature theater
As a constant reminder of the granting of city rights to the Alb community of Hayingen around 1247 and of the festive days of the city's 700th anniversary in 1947, it is indicated every year on St. Vitus' Day (patronage day) by the city's enthusiastic citizens to deepen the love of home and solidarity with their alpine town to hold a festival. This wish comes from the middle of the citizenry. "
The first season of the natural theater of the city of Hayingen then opened on June 19, 1949 with the Hayingen home play “Die Orgelmacher” by Martin Schleker. The great success of this first season proved the founders right and the courage to continue. A new open-air play was premiered almost every year. The pieces were initially by Martin Schleker Senior, who also directed it himself. His son Martin Schleker has been writing the plays since the 1970s, and he had already staged the games in the 1960s.

today
The natural theater has acquired the reputation of a theater with high standards and intelligent entertainment far beyond the borders of the region. Martin Schleker's pieces guarantee quality. The theater music is created with virtuosity by Uli Bühl, musician from Unlingen, for each production. Spectators from Stuttgart, Ravensburg, Ulm and Lake Constance come to Hayingen to visit the natural theater. The Naturtheater Hayingen is also well-known beyond the borders of Swabia, above all because of the profile of the theater under the long-standing direction of Martin Schleker. Since 1949, over 1.1 million guests have found their way into the atmospheric valley of the nature theater.
The scenic charm underlines the plays played in Swabian dialect. The amateur theater both challenges and supports players from the region. Theater actors of all generations (2 to over 70 years old) have been playing together on stage since the beginning of nature theater.
The old auditorium, which no longer met modern requirements, was renovated and rebuilt and has been able to accommodate almost 1,000 visitors since the 2008 season.
The natural theater Hayingen is located in the “ Swabian Alb ” biosphere area and in the “ Großes Lautertal ” nature reserve . The biotopes on the theater grounds are maintained in close cooperation with nature conservation and forestry.
The Hayingen Nature Theater celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2009.
For the first time in the history of the Hayingen Nature Theater, an own children's play was performed in 2012.
