Necrology of the Church of St. Michael in Lüneburg

The Nekrolog der Kirche St. Michael in Lüneburg ( Latin : Necrologium Luneburgensis ecclesiae S. Michaelis ) was a medieval composite manuscript that was created in the 15th century in the St. Michaelis Monastery in Lüneburg by combining different manuscripts. In addition to texts for the liturgy and the Liturgy of the Hours , it mainly contained historical records, including the eponymous necrology . The Codex burned in the Lower Saxony State Archives during a bomb attack on Hanover in 1943. The content is handed down in the notes of some historians of the German Middle Ages by the Lüneburg archivist Anton Christian Wedekind from the years 1821, 1835 and 1836.

The codex, comprising 103 pages of parchment, began with a martyrology . This was followed by a copy of the Benedictine Rule . The subsequent necrology was a copy of a much older Lüneburg Book of the Dead from the 10th century, which was written from 1201 and was continued until 1458. Accordingly, the reporting period extended from around 900 to 1458. After five grave inscriptions and epitaphs on various Billungers and a list of the bishops of Verden , a chronicle of the Michaelis monastery was found (Chronicon S. Michaelis Luneburgensis). It was created in the years 1229–1233 and contained news about people and events from the period from 937 to 1229. The extent to which older sources are based has not yet been conclusively clarified. A short list of princes from the end of the 13th century was followed by the diptych of the Billunger family , created between 1071 and 1085, and a list of the abbots of the monastery, before the volume ended with a deed of donation for the monastery.

In particular, the necrology and the persons listed in it have been extensively researched by Gerd Althoff in his habilitation, published in 1984.
