Nelly Mele Lara

Nelly Mele Lara (* 1922 in Caracas ; † 1993 ibid) was a Venezuelan composer.

Life

Mele Lara studied piano with Elena de Arrarte and became a piano professor in 1954. In 1960 she succeeded Vicente Emilio Sojo at the Escuela Superior de Música as professor of composition. In the mid-1960s she became director of the El Bosque Music School , the Department of Music of the Instituto Nacional de Cultura y de Bellas Artes (INCIBA) and the Conservatory of Aragua, and President of the Asociación Venezolana de Autores y Compositores (AVAC).

Her early works were still under the influence of musical impressionism, her later works were stylistically more modern, with a polyphonic structure and polytonal harmony. She also used instruments such as the electronic organ and the electric guitar.
