NemoS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NemoS is an Italian draftsman and street artist.

According to his own statements, he has been drawing since his youth and is self-taught as an artist . His birth name is unknown, and there are no data on his biography. When he started painting on bare walls in the streets, he chose the stage name NemoS for himself . He signs his murals with the tag "NEMO'S". Nemo means nobody in Latin and is at the same time an allusion to Captain Nemo from the novel " Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea " by Jules Verne .

Mural by NemoS at the port of Messina (detail)

NemoS 'murals are detailed and carefully prepared in sketchbooks. As a rule, he creates the pictures in a varied mixed technique. He uses the paper from Italian daily newspapers, which is laid on top of one another in several layers and repeatedly fixed with glue. There are also acrylic paints and various objects that are incorporated into the picture as collage elements. Structural remnants, windows or holes found on the respective picture carriers can be easily integrated into the picture.

The protagonist of his murals is usually a depressed or melancholy-looking man with clearly visible signs of aging. He shows himself with a wrinkled neck, almost bald, with hollow eyes and emaciated limbs, emaciated to the point of skeleton, locked in a cage or a housing, tied in an inextricable network of cords. Topics of his pictures are - satirically exaggerated - the overexploitation of nature, criticism of capitalism, the coldness of society in relation to the immigrant problem, criticism of the hollow slogans of advertising as well as mourning the children who are deprived of their childhood by the constant manipulation with electronic toys .

Several of his large-format murals were created as part of Sagra della Street Art 2014 over a weekend in the village of Vedriano in the province of Reggio Emilia . In cooperation with the local farmers and the municipal administration, the participating artists were given barns, stables, grain silos, abandoned houses or buildings in communal ownership as painting grounds. In 2018 he took part in the second edition of Street Art Acquedolci .

reception

The Spanish GIF art artist AL Crego has repeatedly used murals from NemoS as the basis for his fleeting and short-lived video animations, which are usually spread quickly via social media on the Internet and are documented in this way.
