Nemo 33 is an indoor diving center that has one of the deepest artificial diving pools in the world with its 35 m deep pool (the deepest has been in Montegrotto Italy at 40 m since 2014). It is located in the center of Uccle / Ukkel , in the south-eastern part of the Brussels region in Belgium. The diving center opened in 2004.

Condition and design

The pool, which is tiled like a swimming pool , houses a frame consisting of several levels. The levels are arranged at different depths. In the shallow entry area there is a 1.3 m and a 2.5 m deep level. Then the basin is divided into three square areas. In the middle there is a level in 5 m water depth, on the right in 10 m water depth, and on the left the large deep water basin with a round cross section extends down to 35 m water depth. The bottom has a compass rose .

The level in the central part of the basin, which is 5 m deep, is submersible. There are also two large cavities below the 5m level that can be surfaced.

From the level in 5 m water depth, divers can watch the film showing in the bar through large windows. At a depth of 10 m there are several replicated underwater caves and a submarine-like tube. The pool contains 2.5 million liters (2500 m 3 ) of non-chlorinated water, which is tempered to 30 ° C. At the surface of the water, the basin has an area of approx. 12 × 15 m. From a ledge in about 10 m water depth a 7 m wide tube leads down to the maximum depth. There are numerous underwater windows through which visitors can look into the plunge pool at different water depths.

Purpose and name

The complex was designed by the Belgian diving specialist John Beernaerts as a multi-purpose facility for divers. It is intended for recreational divers, but also for diving courses and as a film production location for underwater scenes.

The name Nemo 33 is derived from Captain Nemo , a character from Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . Contrary to what the 33 in the name suggests, the bottom of the diving pool is not 33 m but 35 m deep.
