The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is the national mountaineering association of Nepal . The NMA was founded in 1973 with the aim of promoting mountaineering activities in the Himalayas , instilling safety awareness and mountaineering skills among Nepalese climbers, and creating awareness of the beauty of the Himalayas both nationally and internationally. The NMA has been an active member of the UIAA since 1975 .

The NMA was also responsible for managing the climbing permits for 33 mountains with altitudes between 5500 and 6600 meters classified as trekking peaks, while the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) permits for all other mountains open for climbing in Nepal (approx. 300 peaks). In October 2015, the Nepalese government announced that responsibility for the trekking summits would be transferred from the NMA to the MoTCA.
