Neptune's Staircase ( Neptune's Staircase ) is the popular name of a lock system in the Caledonian Canal in Scotland .

The coupling lock consists of eight lock chambers and is the longest staircase in Great Britain. The total stroke in the eight locks is only 64 feet (approx. 20 meters), as the lock gates still had to be moved by hand when the canal was built in the 19th century. Today the gates are hydraulically driven and you would get by with a four-man coupling sluice.

It takes a ship about 90 minutes to pass the eight lock chambers of Neptune's Staircase. The lock is one of the largest in the UK and is controlled by British Waterways .

The building was designed by the Scottish engineer Thomas Telford .

location

Neptune's Staircase is located in the village of Banavie, a few miles from Fort William . The West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig crosses the canal at the lock system. Banavie train station is next to the lock. The Road to the Isles (A380) is right next to the railway line .
