Neranjan Priyadarshana Dullewe Wijeyeratne ( Sinhala නෙරංජන් ප්‍රියදර්ශන දූල්ලෑව විජයරත්න , born August 9, 1956 ) is a Sri Lankan politician. He was Diyawadana Nilame (Chief Lay Custos of Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth)) from 1985 to 2005 and later a politician of the United National Party and chief organizer of the Galagedara Electorate in Kandy district and leader of the opposition in the Kandy Municipal Council .

Neranjan Priyadarshana Dullewe Wijeyeratne was born to Nissanka Wijeyeratne and his wife Nita Dullewe Wijeyeratne. He has two brothers and a sister ( Mano , Anuradha , Lankesh and Nishangani). The father Nissanka Wijeyeratne and the grandfather Sir Edwin Wijeyeratne were prominent politicians and the brother Mano also served as a non-cabinet minister for "Enterprise Development and Plantation Services". The brother Anuradha was "Provincial Councilor" and acted several times on behalf of Diyawadana Nilame. Neranjan was educated at the Royal College, Colombo .

Diyawadana Nilame

Neranjan succeeded his father in March 1985 as Diyawadana Nilame (Chief lay Custodian) of Sri Dalada Maligawa and filled this office for 20 years until 2005. He was re-elected in 1995 for this purpose. Before that he served as the "Basnayake Nilame" (Lay Custodian) of the Lankathilaka Maha Vishnu Devalaya in Kandy for 5 years . He was widely praised for his skills, which he demonstrated while rebuilding the temple after a bomb attack by the LTTE ( Tamil தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகள் ) in 1998. In addition, he was responsible for the construction of the "Golden Fence" around Sri Dalada Maligawa and set up the "Dalada Museum", in which works of art and artifacts are shown, which have to do with Sri Dalada Maligawa and Buddhism in Sri Lanka in general . The "Temple of the Tooth Special Development Fund" and the "Sri Dalada Maligawa Buddhist Welfare Fund" were established by him. He also had the Pallekale Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (Thai Sri Lanka International Buddhist Institution) built with a modern auditorium with up to 1000 seats. During his tenure, he maintained close contacts with Buddhist dignitaries from Japan , China , Thailand and Myanmar and was an important ambassador for Sri Lanka's Buddhist heritage.

Political career

After his second term as Diyawadana Nilame, he resigned and began a political career.

family

Wijeyeratne is married to Devika Mediwake, the daughter of Laxminath and Chintha Mediwake , a granddaughter of William Gopallawa (first President of Sri Lanka). The couple has two children, Mokshana Wijeyeratne and Navindra Wijeyeratne .
