Morne Fortune (originally: Morne Dubuc ) is a hill and the residential area of the same name in the south of the island's capital Castries on Saint Lucia , the island state of the West Indies .

geography

Morne Fortune is a small mountain ridge that stretches from Tapion Shoal in the northwest to the south into the interior of the island. It rises to 260 m (582 ft). The settlement is about 800 m south of the center of Castries above the port of La Toc on the hill. The Morne Road (Morne Fortune Road) which begins near the police headquarters, winds up in several serpentines up the hill and then continues south to Cul de Sac Valley and the port Buckeye St. Lucia Terminal . The area is often referred to as "Good Lands".

history

During the French colonial era , Morne Dubuc was renamed Morne Fortune when the French moved their military headquarters and administrative buildings from Vigie here. A fort was built, but it was conquered by the British on April 1, 1794 . They named it Fort Charlotte . It was recaptured by the French in June 1795 and again conquered by the British on May 24th, 1796. Even today a memorial commemorates the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot , whose soldiers fought the battle. France regained possession through the Peace of Amiens , but Commodore Samuel Hood defeated the French governor Général de Brigade Antoine Noguès in June 1803, and from then on the fort remained in British hands until independence in 1979.

The fort on the summit still exists and there are some old military structures designated as Historic Area ( Provost Park and Appostles Battery ) and war graves. The Saint Lucia National Trust manages this area. At the top of the hill is a University of the West Indies campus and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College . On the north side there is also the Government House , the official residence of the Governor General , as well as St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church and other sacred buildings. The hill offers a beautiful view of Castries.
