Network DDE

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Network DDE (also called NetDDE) is an extension of Dynamic Data Exchange that enables data to be exchanged between programs within a network. Similar to local DDE, there is a client that requests data and a server that provides data, except that with network DDE, the server must explicitly release the data for the network. A proxy accepts the DDE requests from the programs and transmits them to the other computer in the network via NetBIOS , where a proxy then forwards this request as a regular DDE request.

Programs that used network DDE for transmission included Windows Chat and the card game Hearts . For security reasons, network DDE has been removed without replacement in Windows Vista after it had already been deactivated by default in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 .
