The New Town Hall in Celle , also called Heide-Kaserne or Taunton Barracks , is a former barracks and since 1999 the seat of the city administration and the mayor.

description

The neo-Gothic brick building is 181 meters long and has a ridge height of 25 meters. It has 5 floors and, designed as a barracks, offered space for 1200 soldiers in 300 rooms. After three years of conversion into an administration building, the New Town Hall is now a modern, representative town hall .

history

In 1852 the site was acquired by the Royal Hanoverian Military Administration . After the annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover by Prussia in 1866, construction work began in 1869. The infantry barracks were occupied in 1872 by the 2nd Hannoversche Infantry Regiment No. 77, which was disbanded in 1919. Units of the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht followed . After the end of the Second World War , the barracks served as a refugee camp that was administered by the United Nations . British units were stationed here from 1956 to 1992. Among other things, the 94th Locating Regiment from 1956 to 1984 and the 14th Signal Regiment of the Royal Artillery from 1984 to 1992 .

In 1994 the city of Celle acquired the barracks area and began renovating the main building in 1996, which was officially opened on May 8, 1999. Furthermore, several parking spaces and a 1.7 hectare park were created. In addition, several outbuildings were redesigned, for example the old drill hall into a multi-purpose hall for concerts, exhibitions and larger gatherings.
