Neuromancer is a computer game based on the cyberpunk novel Neuromancer by William Gibson . It belongs to the genre of adventure role-playing games.

Neuromancer is set in the fictional, futuristic city of Chiba City, which is also where a larger part of the novel takes place. The player takes on the role of a hacker whose nervous system, with the help of which he can log into cyberspace , was damaged by a former client. In order to be able to have his nervous system repaired, the player roams the city and accepts various assignments.

Game principle and technology

Neuromancer from 1988 is a 2D game in side view. The playing figure is moved with the keyboard or joystick . A special feature was the simulation of the Internet within the game, including various Internet pages, downloads, e-mail use and logging in while on the go, e.g. B. in the hotel.

Production notes

Neuromancer was released in 1988 for the Commodore 64 , Apple IIc / e and Apple IIgs and was advertised with the line accompanying the name "A Cyberpunk Role-Playing Adventure" ('a cyberpunk adventure role-playing game'). It appeared in 1989 for the MS-DOS operating system on IBM-compatible PCs, in 1990 for the Amiga 500 and Amiga 600 . It was developed by Interplay Productions .

The Amiga Joker praised the atmosphere, game design, graphics and user friendliness of the game and only criticized the soundtrack. The magazine pointed out that the challenge of converting the "ultimate novel" into a computer game had been a success.
