Neustadt-Dürkheimer Railway Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neustadt-Dürkheimer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (NDE) was founded as the third of the Palatinate private railway companies on October 22, 1862 for the construction of the Neustadt a./Haardt - Dürkheim line .

history

In 1860 a local committee from the small Palatinate towns of Deidesheim and Dürkheim applied for the concession for a railway with the Neustadt a./Haardt-Dürkheim-Frankenthal route. Improvements were expected, especially for the factories in the Dürkheim Valley. In addition, reference was made to the fact that most of the wine from the Oberhaardt region was shipped via Mainz. Due to a customs agreement between the residents of the Rhine, loading at this location was subject to high taxes. The aim was to avoid this via the Frankenthal intermediate station - where no customs duties were incurred.

However, this route led to direct competition with the Ludwigsbahn and rightly feared difficulties. So the Ludwigsbahn was offered to build the route on their own account, as their concession allows. However, the Ludwigsbahn rejected this request. On January 25, 1862, an agreement was finally reached, which was based on a pure local railway between Neustadt and Dürkheim. The license was granted on August 28, 1862, and the new company was founded on October 22, 1862.

The business and operational management of the company was transferred from the beginning to the Palatinate Ludwig Railway Company , with which they also worked closely.

The track construction

Due to planning problems - concerning the location of the Wachenheim train station - and those with land procurement, the construction of the railway was delayed until 1863. The responsible section office was set up in Deidesheim. Its director was the district engineer J. König . In contrast to all other lines planned or built by the Palatinate Railway Company to date, this line was planned as a single-track local line from the start. In September 1863, work began on building the line. The hilly terrain caused earth movements of over half a million cubic meters and 62 engineering structures for the 13.6-kilometer route from Dürkheim to Neustadt an der Haardt (since 1935 Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ). It was finally able to open on May 6, 1865, but did not bring the expected income.

The merger

When the three large Palatinate railroad companies merged to form the Palatinate Railways on January 1, 1870 , the Palatinate Northern Railways company took over the share capital of the NDE in advance and this was incorporated into the company. The NDE shareholders received shares of the Palatinate Northern Railways of the same value for their shares. The Palatinate Northern Railway then built a continuation of the route from Dürkheim to Grünstadt in 1873 with a connection to the Prussian-Hessian State Railways.
