Neutrality bow
The Arch of Neutrality ( Turkmen Bitaraplyk arkasy ) is 95 meters high and is the tallest structure in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat . It is now in the southern part of the city after being rebuilt and relocated in 2011.
history
The original, 75-meter-high arch was built in 1998 on behalf of the then President Saparmyrat Nyýazow to celebrate the recognition as a neutral state by the UN on December 12, 1995 in the center of Ashgabat on Independence Square . The construction costs amounted to twelve million US dollars . After Niyazov's death and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow's takeover , the new president signed a decree that ordered the dismantling and transport of the monument and its reconstruction in a modified form in a suburb of the capital. The work was done by the Turkish company Polimeks , which also built the original arch. The dismantling began with the removal of the golden statue of Niyazov from the arch on August 26, 2010. In 2011 the arch was reopened, now at a height of 95 meters.
The relocation of the statue was seen by observers as an attempt by Berdimuhamedow to curb the personality cult around his predecessor, who was known as the "father of the Turkmen".
construction
The arch of neutrality stands on three feet; on its top is a golden statue of the former Turkmen president Saparmyrat Nyýazow. When it was completed in 1998, the structure was 75 meters high; the golden statue is twelve meters high. Originally, the statue rotated during the day so that it was always aligned with the position of the sun. After the laying and the renovation, the arch is 95 meters high, whereby a rotation of the statue is no longer possible. The building offers a publicly accessible viewing platform.
