Nevera de Cervera is a Spanish ice house (Nevero artificial) built in the 16th century in the Barrio San Miguel, a suburb of Cervera del Río Alhama in the province of La Rioja . It is a listed building.

Principle of snow stratification

Historical documents describe the collection and storage of snow since the 16th century. During this time, the snow that had been collected in winter was poured into the building, where it was compacted into ice and then covered in several layers by insulating material such as straw, so that the ice lasted into the summer months. The ice obtained in this way was used in agriculture, catering and private homes. The use of the Nevera de Cervera ended with the introduction of electric cooling and freezing systems in the early 1920s.

The spherical structure, in the mountainous area of the city of Cervera del Rio Alhama, is an element of the rural cultural heritage (Bienes de interés cultural). This construction is in municipal property and was extensively restored in 2013. The work was funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Spanish Ministry of the Environment.
